What is a referral?Print

In coming to a selected healthcare provider, the patient must provide - in addition to confirmation of entitlement to benefits – a valid medical examination referral. It is a document required for access to diagnostic tests and the benefits provided under:

  • outpatient specialist care,
  • hospitalisation,
  • health resort stay,
  • rehabilitation,
  • care of chronically ill patients.

The referral is not required in emergencies concerning threats to health or life!

Referral to a specialist is not an information card from the hospital, emergency room or hospital emergency department. If the information card contains recommendation to continue treatment, the attending physician should issue the referral for the patient.
Please note that based on one referral a patient may only register at a single provider providing services in the field!
