What is a referral?Print

When coming to a selected healthcare provider, the patient must provide - in addition to confirmation of entitlement to benefits – a valid medical examination referral. This is a document required for access to diagnostic tests and the benefits provided under:

  • outpatient specialist care,
  • hospitalisation,
  • health resort stay,
  • rehabilitation,
  • care of chronically ill patients.

A referral is not required in emergencies concerning threats to health or life!

A patient's records from a hospital, emergency room or hospital emergency department do not constitute a referrel. If the records contain a recommendation to continue treatment, the attending physician should issue a referral for the patient.
Please note that one referral entitles a patient to register at only one specialist providing services in the field!
